My car: |
1957 T1 1600N coupe 58,986. |
Tip-off that a 356 was the car for
me: |
While attending college in Champaign-Urbana, I
happened to walk by the armory during a car show. First car I saw
was a 356A coupe, there must have been other cars there, but I only
remember the Porsche coupe. After graduating and finding a job I
bought the first used Porsche I found, for $2500. It was 1959. |
My age when I acquired my first
356: |
28. |
Engine type: |
A 1600N "Damen", but later the car was
propelled by a 1500N engine rescued from a Speedster found in an
Evanston junkyard, later by a two piece case 1500S. It will be
reunited with its "original" engine soon. The case will be
original, not much else.

Miles driven per year: |
From 1983 to 1988 we averaged 5,141 miles per
year. Car was used for daily transportation until the floor would
no longer support the driver's seat in 1991. |
Favorite destination: |
Meadowdale, took drivers ed in this car, it
wore a big "X" (beginner). No police--that was heaven!!! |
Fantasy road trip: |
Drive it in Europe. |
Most inconvenient mechanical
failure: |
Stuck exhaust valve somewhere around Fon du
Lac, WI. Limped home on three cylinders. Bad day, all for 0.001"
stem clearance. |
Car I'd have if I couldn't have a
356: |
904. |
What I like most about my car: |
Shape. |
Most unique feature: |
Well, it's about to have duel circuit disc
brakes, 12V, otherwise pretty stock. |
Most recent repair: |
Car is currently a shell, recently dipped at
Restoration Specialists in Milwaukee, then "E" coated in Michigan.
Now at Dave Zimmer's Paintwerks. I'm paying the price for street
parking the car for many years. |
Longest drive so far: |
Aspen a couple of times, including the 5th
parade. |
Next project with this car: |
Put it back together. It's going to look like
it just came out the doors of Reutter, this time in Ruby Red, not
its original black |
