For Sale: 1964 Porsche SC Coupe, VIN 218585 / Motor 812284
I have decided to restore an A coupe and to change the color of my
speedster and build a hot 912 motor. So much for the good news.
My wife has decided these endeavors will be financed by the sale of my
SC coupe.
The coupe is a California car with extensive records back to the early
70’s. In 1987, it was changed from Bali blue to Champagne yellow
and Elgin Cam rebuilt the motor with one of their cams and a big bore
kit. Later the car was brought to Chicago where it had two owners
who apparently used it rarely.
Prior to buying it three years ago, I drove the car to 365 Works
Glenview, Illinois for an inspection. Tom Funk found the bottom to
be original and very solid and the car to be fundamentally very good,
but needing relatively minor attention in a wide variety of areas.
I had him sort out the car. Work included: new clutch, pressure
plate and throw out bearing, replacing an over-torqued rocker stand,
engine and trans mounts, steering box adjustment and general service of
suspension and brakes, replacing fuel line and linkage bushings and
tuning engine, etc. (Records are available.)
In addition, I had the front seats re-upholstered in leather from Autos
International, put on chrome wheels and new 165 15 tires. After
over $5000 of sorting, the only problem I’ve encountered in over 10,000
trouble-free miles has been a noisy generator which was replaced, and a
broken speedo cable. The car pulls like a bear and invites you to
blow by modern highway traffic. I am told that the Nardi wheel is
original.
When I bought the car, there were a variety of dings and stone chips and
a few bubbles along the bottom three inches of one door skin.
Three years of driving had added a few more, so I decided to have the
bottom of the door re-skinned and to get rid of the blemishes. The
only way the body shop could assure me of an excellent and long-lasting
job, was to strip the body down to bare metal prior to re-painting.
The paint has been chemically removed and the door bottom re-skinned.
Glass, doors, hood and trunk were removed and jams were painted.
Rubber and deco strips were replaced as needed. Progress photos
are available.
The price is $55,000. The car is nicer and more desirable than the
Champagne yellow B coupe I saw at the recent R.M. Auction in Arizona
which sold for $100,000. The original tool kit is available.
I can be reached at 847-275-5813.
